What are ‘Old World’ wines, and what are ‘New World’ wines? What distinguishes these two major categories stylistically, and how have the lines blurred in recent years due to warmer, earlier vintages in vineyards throughout the world? Further, how have winemaking practices evolved to make it even more difficult to distinguish them from each other?&nbsp;</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;height:1.618em;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;"></p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">We considered offering a reenactment of the Judgment of Paris - a landmark blind wine tasting held in Paris on May 24, 1976, organized by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier to celebrate the American Bicentennial. The event pitted top California Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons against renowned French wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux. Surprisingly, California came out on top, shaking the wine world to its core. However, given the above considerations, it doesn’t seem like a level playing field today. Therefore, we put our wine nerd hats on, and did some critical thinking - and tasting. Lots of tasting…&nbsp;</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">Old World wines come primarily from Europe, with historic winemaking traditions dating back thousands of years. Examples include France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Greece, and Hungary. New World wines originate from regions that adopted winemaking traditions later, such as North and South America, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.&nbsp;</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;">Climatic factors have been a primary driver in the stylistic differences between Old World and New World wines. Historically, Old World wine regions tended towards cooler climates with more variable weather, meaning grapes ripened more slowly and less fully, resulting in wines with higher acidity, lower alcohol content, and lighter body, making them well-suited to food pairing. Cooler climates also allow for the subtle, earthy, mineral, and terroir-driven flavors that reflect soil, topography, and vintage variation. These wines often have complex yet restrained flavor profiles and greater aging potential.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.38;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:6pt;" class="">In contrast, New World wine regions generally have warmer climates with longer, drier, sunnier growing seasons meaning that grapes have no trouble achieving maximum ripeness. The resulting wines are fuller bodied, with lower acidity, higher alcohol and bolder, riper fruit flavors that can withstand more prominent oak influence. They also tend to be less food-friendly and less age-worthy.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.38;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:6pt;" class="">While climate has been the traditional, major distinguishing factor, climate change is causing some shifts: Old World regions are producing riper, higher-alcohol wines, and New World winemakers are increasingly exploring higher elevation or cooler sites to maintain acidity and freshness.&nbsp;</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.38;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:6pt;" class="">Winemaking traditions have also played a major part. European vignerons are largely bound to appellation laws, whereas their New World counterparts are not, allowing for much more freedom to experiment. This is slowly changing, however. As younger generations in the Old World with a fresh perspective are eschewing the stodgy traditions of their predecessors, and winemakers around the world are embracing a more natural winemaking approach, the differences in the glass are more ambiguous than ever.&nbsp;</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.38;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:6pt;" class="">So, let’s dive in and see if we can discern the stylistic factors distinguishing them today. To level the playing field as much as possible, for each Wine Club tier we’ve chosen two white wines and two red wines (one from the Old World, and one from the New), from the same vintage, made from the same primary grape variety, with similar vinegrowing and winemaking practices. Let the games begin!</p>

Their 1971 Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon came in fourth at the landmark 1976 competition, and took first place at the 30th anniversary re-enactment of the Judgment of Paris held in 2006. Ridge Monte Bello remains one of California's most prestigious and age-worthy wines, celebrated for its balance, elegance and moderate ripeness that is simply unattainable in most New World wine regions. While Monte Bello (which we do carry!) was clearly off the table, the Grenache Blanc called to me… all I had to do was find a Grenache Blanc-dominant Rhône from the same vintage with similar winemaking practices. Enter Château de Montfaucon Comtesse Madeleine…&nbsp;</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;height:1.618em;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.8;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;" class=""></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.8;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;" class="">Both wines display freshness, aromatic purity and complexity, with a medium-bodied frame balanced between richness and acidity. Rodolphe de Pins took over the family estate of Montfaucon in 1995 and subsequently rebuilt the winery and began practicing sustainable agriculture. He terraced the slopes, planted vineyards, and built a winery carved into the mountainside, producing the first vintage in 1892. The modern era of Ridge began in 1959 when four Stanford Research Institute engineers purchased the estate and started producing estate Cabernet Sauvignon wines under the Ridge label, with their first official vintage in 1962.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.8;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:6pt;" class="">Ridge gained international acclaim for its flagship Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon, which was among the highest-rated wines at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, putting California wines on the global map. Ridge pioneered sustainable and organic farming practices, transitioning to 100% organic vineyards by 1999, and has maintained a philosophy of “hands-off” winemaking to express terroir authentically.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;text-align:justify;white-space:normal !important;line-height:1.8;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:6pt;" class="">Today, Ridge Vineyards operates at Monte Bello and Lytton Springs in Sonoma County, producing terroir-driven wines celebrated for balance, complexity, and age-worthiness. Malolactic fermentation occurs partially in steel tanks and partially in (used) French oak barrels and then aged for 6–8 months in used French oak barrels. The winery practices non-interventionist winemaking, leaving the wine largely alone during barrel aging to preserve its distinct character. Before bottling, the wine is coarsely filtered using natural earth filters to optimize clarity while avoiding fining, so it is naturally Vegan.</p><p style="font-size:.9375em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;color:#313131;line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;" class=""><strong>Tasting Note:</strong> A balanced, fresh, and approachable style, featuring a floral and elegant nose with vivid blue and purple fruits, geranium, briar, and violets, accompanied by a plump and round palate with sweet blue fruit and medium-full body. 14.5% abv</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;color:#313131;"><br><strong>Serving:</strong> 54°F to 60°F in a a large-bowl red wine glass&nbsp;</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;color:#313131;"><strong>Pairing: </strong>Anything we’ve recommended with the Bouhou Malbec will work beautifully with this one as well; try it with a traditional Argentine asado with chimichurri.&nbsp;</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;color:#313131;"><strong>Press: </strong>90 points, James Suckling</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;color:#313131;"><strong>Cases Produced:</strong> 4,000</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Segoe UI', Candara, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.01em;color:#313131;"><strong>Drinking Window:</strong> Now - 2029</p></div>
